History and Development
This search led me to the Carrboro Town Hall. Founded in 1882 along the University of North Carolina railroad spur, Carrboro originally bore the name West End due to its westward location from Chapel Hill. It underwent several name changes, eventually settling on Carrboro in 1913, honoring local textile mill owner Julian Shakespeare Carr, who played a significant role in its development.
Initially a small mill town, Carrboro experienced gradual growth, housing around 2,000 residents by 1960. Subsequent decades saw a significant population surge, tied to the expansion of UNC-Chapel Hill and regional businesses. Notably, Carrboro evolved into a progressive community, becoming the first town in North Carolina to elect an openly gay Mayor in 1995 and pioneering domestic partner benefits for same-sex couples.
Throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, continued growth fostered a vibrant and diverse community. This led to establishing of various cultural landmarks, including the Carrboro Farmer’s Market, the ArtsCenter, Cat’s Cradle, and annual events like the Carrboro Music Festival and Carrboro Film Festival.
Despite its roots in the late 19th century as a railroad extension and textile mill locale, Carrboro’s transformation into a progressive haven reflects its commitment to inclusivity, environmental consciousness, and social equity. Today, Carrboro remains a testament to its working-class origins while striving for a more inclusive and equitable future.
