Jenni Yolo, the creative force behind the popular blog “I Spy DIY,” took on the challenge of reviving a dilapidated Milwaukee home with her husband, turning it into a stunning testament to her vision and creativity. Here’s how she worked her magic.

Before we get into the house let me tell you about Jenni, the creative force behind I Spy DIY. Growing up in the Midwest, she cultivated her love for DIY fashion from a young age, inspired by the allure of high fashion magazines. Unable to find those styles in local stores, she embarked on a journey of sewing, thrifting, and embellishing her own creations.

Her passion for recreating runway looks blossomed into a career while living in New York City and working at InStyle magazine. There, she translated high-end fashion into affordable DIY projects, earning her a monthly column and eventually leading to the publication of her book, “I Spy DIY Style,” in 2012.

After eight years in the bustling city, Jenni returned to her roots in Wisconsin, where she established a creative studio and expanded her DIY repertoire to include home decor. This newfound passion culminated in her most ambitious project yet: the purchase and renovation of a dilapidated 1890s home for just $24,000.

Despite its neglected state, Jenni saw potential in the rundown property and embarked on a whirlwind four-month renovation journey. Her efforts didn’t go unnoticed, as a camera crew captured the entire process for a pilot on HGTV titled “My Flippin’ Friends.”

While the pilot aired a few times, it never secured a full season. Undeterred, Jenni continues to inspire DIY enthusiasts through her website, events, and media appearances, including features on Good Morning America and Rachael Ray.

From fashion to home decor, Jenni’s passion for creativity and resourcefulness shines through in every project she undertakes. Follow along as she shares her DIY adventures and proves that with a little ingenuity, anything is possible. Besides her blog ISPYDIY.com she also has an Instagram account, @ISPYDIY on Instagram.

A Diamond in the Rough

When Jenni stumbled upon this century-old house, it was a far cry from the charming abode it is today. It was a foreclosure and she gutted it within 4 months. With dropped ceilings, grimy floors, and a host of unwanted guests, including cockroaches and rodents, it seemed beyond repair. Yet, Jenni saw potential in the midst of the decay, drawn by the bargain price tag of $24,000 and the promise of a blank canvas for her design dreams.

A Vision Unfolds

Armed with determination and a keen eye for design, Jenni embarked on a whirlwind renovation journey. Every inch of the circa-1885 house received her thoughtful attention, from the exterior facelift to the intricate details of the interior. With meticulous planning and strategic investments, she transformed the once-forgotten dwelling into a cozy yet modern retreat.

The Heart of the Home

In the kitchen, Jenni prioritized functionality and aesthetics, opting for ample windows to flood the space with natural light. Copper sconces and glass pendant lights add a touch of elegance, while salvaged wood shelves infuse character into the room. With careful consideration of layout and design, she created a kitchen that seamlessly blends style with practicality.

Crafting Creativity

As a DIY enthusiast, Jenni carved out a dedicated space for her crafting endeavors. Wall-to-wall modular furniture and clever storage solutions ensure that every tool and supply has its place, inspiring creativity and organization. Cork squares serve as a giant bulletin board, while repurposed yogurt cups find new life as storage containers—an ode to Jenni’s resourcefulness.

A Personal Touch

Throughout the home, Jenni’s passion for design and attention to detail shine brightly. From handcrafted barn doors to custom-built furniture pieces, each element reflects her unique style and personality. Vintage finds and thrifted treasures add warmth and character, creating a space that feels both curated and inviting. We love a good thrift shop adventure! There is always things to find and the hunt is fun. You never know what is there waiting for you to discover.
