Hello, fellow Triangle residents! We’re here to shed light on a recent development that’s been making waves in our community—the proposed increase in homeowners insurance rates. State insurance regulators recently held a public hearing to gather opinions on the suggested rate hike.

Understanding the Proposal

Earlier this month, the North Carolina Rate Bureau proposed a significant average increase of 42.2%, citing losses in insuring homes across the state. This proposal has sparked considerable concern among homeowners.

Community Voices

At the public comment hearing, community members, including longtime realtor Helen Mayhew, expressed strong opposition to the proposed change. Mayhew emphasized the potential impact on homeowners, describing the increase as “ridiculous.”

Regional Impact

The proposed increase isn’t uniform across the state. In Wake and Durham counties, the bureau is seeking a 39% increase, translating to over $500 added to the average yearly insurance bill for homeowners. Along the southeastern coast, the request is even more substantial, with a 99% increase for beach communities.

Factors at Play

The Rate Bureau attributes the coastal hike to climate change, citing more severe storms and increased coastal residency. However, critics argue that these factors shouldn’t justify such significant price hikes for homeowners.

The Decision-Making Process

Fred Fuller, the hearing officer, will report to Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey, who has the final say on whether and how much rates will rise. The State Department of Insurance will engage in closed-door negotiations with the Rate Bureau to reach a compromise.

Some residents expressed disappointment that Commissioner Causey did not attend the public meeting. However, a spokesperson clarified that, due to his role as a judge in this situation, impartiality is crucial. Commissioner Causey assured the community that all comments would be seriously considered.
